Latest Strategy Magazine published
All members should receive their copy of the June 2007 issue of Strategy Magazine soon.
Leading the summer issue are two articles aimed at ensuring both private and public sector organisations reap the benefits from their strategic plans. First, the results of the latest Management Consultancies Association survey (supported by SPS) reveal that more than one-third of organisations feel their strategy does not provide any added value – but comparisons with the approach of private equity firms reveal advantages that cannot be attained under existing management methods. Second, a case for achieving high-performance government through a focus on creating public value. Both articles are highlighted below.
Also in this issue, an examination of the technological considerations organisations must build into a successful business strategy. IT can help to achieve competitive advantage – if managers understand the impact technology has on overall performance.
Finally, a look at the role human resources play in the overall success of business strategy – by exploring the ways in which different cultural environments affect how managers make decisions, and by factoring in human resources as a critical element towards achieving high performance.
Included in this issue is the latest of our twice-yearly publications updates, providing readers with a brief synopsis of some of the latest business strategy books now available on the market.

Executing strategy: lessons from private equity
Organisations are more committed to developing strategy today than ever before, according to the latest Management Consultancies Association research – in which almost 300 SPS members participated. However, more than one-third of respondents think that the resultant strategies are a waste of time and do not add value.
To explore the causes of this negative phenomenon, Fiona Czerniawska examines the experiences of businesses which have been acquired by private equity firms to find out what they do differently from existing management. The article outlines the advantages of the private equity ownership model and what organisations can learn from it.

Delivering public value
The creation of public value has become a pivotal focus of public service organisations. As such, these organisations must learn to balance the production of social outcomes against the level of resources required to achieve the benefits that consumers, citizens and taxpayers expect.
Greg Parston, director of the Accenture Institute for Public Service Value, addresses some of the key issues in the assessment of how public value is created. While challenges still remain, adopting a clear focus on the production of social outcomes and creating public value can lead to high-performance government, as long as stakeholders such as managers and political leaders lend their support.
