Strategy engagement | February, 2008

Dear ,

One of the benefits of being a member of the Strategic Planning Society is that you receive free copies of the excellent management journal Long Range Planning (LRP as it's known). As you may already know you can search for past articles from our other publication, Strategy Magazine, on the SPS website, but until now we've had no indexing of the subjects covered in LRP. I'm glad to announce that's about to change. We will soon be uploading several years' worth of LRP abstracts to the SPS library, making your back issues an even more valuable resource. Other innovations are in the pipeline, so do keep visiting the website.

Strategic Value in Corporate Reporting Awards 2008

A well constructed annual report narrative is rapidly becoming a highly effective competitive tool. What it says about strategic capability can now provide a quantifiable indication of the growth and profitability of that company over the medium term.

The Strategic Value in Corporate Reporting Awards are conferred annually by the SPS to FTSE100 and FTSE250 companies that demonstrate the highest standards of strategy disclosure and commentary in their annual corporate reporting.

Alan Brown, the (last ever) CFO of ICI Group, will make the keynote speech and co-present the awards at this year's ceremony at the Royal Overseas League in London on 1 May. ICI won 'Best strategy and objectives by a FTSE100' last year. The event is open to SPS members at a cost of £15 plus VAT (members who are graduate and postgraduate business school students are free). It is also open to a limited number of non-members at £25 plus VAT.

For more information or to book a place contact Louise Thorpe on +44 (0)845 056 3663 or email her.

Strategic Value in Corporate Reporting Awards – sponsorship opportunities

The SPS is inviting like-minded organisations that are committed to helping raise the standard of future-oriented reporting among all UK listed companies to sponsor one of the eight awards.

Sponsoring an award, for a modest sum, provides significant benefits, including having your organisation's name linked with the award, presenting the award and receiving free invitations to the ceremony itself, as well as coverage in Strategy Magazine, this e-newsletter and the associated media campaign.

For more information about the awards or to discuss sponsorship opportunities, please call the SPS trustee and treasurer Ian McDonald Wood on +44 (0)1962 793800 or email him.

Promote your events to fellow strategists

As part of the relaunched website, the SPS has introduced a Diary & Events facility. This new feature enables members to advertise their own events, which SPS members can attend. So please do contact us and help spread the word about your event to fellow strategists.

Help shape the future of the SPS – become a trustee

Trustees keep the SPS functioning and we are always looking for new ideas and enthusiasm. So do consider supporting the society in this way. You may even have fun doing it. If you would like more details of what being a trustee involves, please call the SPS chairman James Leaton Gray on +44 (0)20 8008 1121 or email him.

Strategy engagement

Most organisations are concerned about the connection between their business strategy and the behaviour of their employees, but as Daniel Wolf argues, simple awareness of strategy is not enough to influence employee behaviour. In the December issue of Strategy Magazine, he shows why strategy engagement – which includes accountability for business results – is required for people to come together and advance the interests of the organisation.
