| Strategic talent management | December, 2007 |
| |
Dear ,
Welcome to December's issue of the SPS e-newsletter. Welcome, too, to a new version of the SPS website. If you haven't visited for a while, or even not at all, then do have a look. It's been substantially redesigned to give far easier access to the content that makes it such a unique resource for SPS members. Over 100 articles, papers and conference digests are currently available and more will be added in the coming months. It also boasts an easier-to-use Diary & Events page, with SPS events and those of our partner companies simpler to find. This also means that member organisations are now able to advertise their own events which SPS members can attend. So please do email us and help spread the word about your event to fellow strategists.
As some of you know I work in broadcasting, so you might expect me to be obsessive about new media. However, I have championed these improvements not for their own sake, but because there was some great content on the old website which was buried. Now I think all of our members will find the new website far easier to use and I hope you'll come back to it more regularly.
James Leaton Gray, Chairman

Strategy Magazine published
All members will shortly be receiving their copy of the December 2007 issue of Strategy Magazine.
This issue puts strategic talent management concerns in the spotlight. The first of two articles on this topic examines the challenges organisations need to address if they are to ensure they attract and retain the right talent to maintain their long-term competitiveness, while the second reports the findings of one of the biggest employment surveys of its kind, revealing that employers know far less than they think they do about the motives and intentions of their employees.
Also included are articles on strategy engagement, a roundtable discussion exploring 'what if' scenarios organisations should incorporate into their strategic planning, as well as the latest instalment of our biannual publications update.
If you are not a SPS member but are interested in joining, you can request a sample copy and membership details: contact membership@sps.org.uk or visit the SPS website and provide your details. |

Strategic talent management
The modern world and the steady march of globalisation have forced people issues to the top of the business agenda. In issue 14 of Strategy Magazine, Peter Cheese, managing director of Accenture's human performance practice, argues that in order to maintain long-term competitiveness, organisations need to ensure they have employees with the right skills and capabilities to support their business strategies.

Playing to win
One of the biggest employment surveys of its kind shows that employers know less than they think they do about the motives and intentions of their employees. In the December issue of Strategy Magazine, Richard Donkin, leading author and Financial Times journalist, looks at how these gaps in employer knowledge are undermining financial success and defining winners and losers in the war for talent.
